Caption

Lymphoma. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue showing a lymphoma (cancer of the lymph tissue). Numerous lymphocyte white blood cells with large dark nuclei are seen. The lymphatic system is a network of nodes (glands) and ducts that carry lymph fluid around the body. This contains white blood cells that fight infections. Lymphoma causes proliferation of these cells, although they are not fully functional, and it severely compromises the working of the immune system. This makes the patient susceptible to opportunistic infections, which may be fatal. Anti-cancer drugs, radiotherapy or bone marrow tr- ansplants may prolong life. Magnification unknown.
