Skin cancer. Light micrograph of a sebaceous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. This cancer arises in the sebum-producing cells, those which secrete sebum onto the skin. Prolonged overexposure to sunlight is thought to be the major cause. It is a malignant tumour, and can spread to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis. If this has happened, treatment is usually unsatisfactory, but if the tumour is detected early, surgical removal can effect a cure. Magnification unknown.
