Stomach cancer tissue. Light micrograph of a slice through tissue from a cancerous stomach. A cancer is the abnormal proliferation of cells that clump to form tumours. These can grow and spread through the body, damaging organs and eventually causing death. Cellular structure and cell nuclei (purple) are seen here. Cancer of the stomach is a common cancer, and is thought to be associated with diet, ulcers and smoking. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are generally ineffective, and surgery to remove parts or all of the stomach is the only effective treatment. The prognosis is poor. Magnification unknown.
