Salivary gland cancer. Light micrograph of a section through an adenocarcinoma of the salivary gland. An adenocarcinoma is a cancer of glandular tissue. It is typically highly invasive and can spread rapidly to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis. The glandular structure of the cancer is seen by the large irregular spaces. If the cancer is diagnosed before it has spread then surgical removal may effect a cure. If it has spread beyond its initial site then the prognosis is poor, although chemotherapy and radiotherapy may slow its progress.
