Caption

Polar phases of a sample of mercury under harmonic vibration. The coil of a speaker was connected to a spherical cup filled with mercury and then fed with a stable sine sound wave. Constructive and destructive interference interactions force the sample to form geometric shapes. Different modulations produce distinct patterns related to the harmonic ratios between frequency, the material volume and its density. Patterns of sound and matter have long been explored by scientists and artists.
