Lymph node cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a lymph node of a patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Lymph nodes filter harmful organisms from tissue fluid. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell in the body's immune system. In this case, the cancerous lymphocytes (dark purple circles) are widely spread through the lymphoid tissue. NHL symptoms are varied and can include: lymph node enlargement, headaches, skin ulceration, loss of appetite, fever and constant fatigue. Treatment is by radiotherapy, anti-cancer drugs and, if necessary, bone marrow transplant. Magnification: x110 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
