Cancer research. Researcher with a tray of electrophoresis gel. Electrical wires (lower right) and a power supply (centre left) provide electricity. The tray also contains cell cultures. These cell cultures have been exposed to toxins and cancer-causing chemicals. This causes the DNA (genetic material) of the cells to degrade, and this is detected by the comet electrophoresis effect. Photographed in the Health and Pollutants Laboratory of the INRS (the French National Institute of Research and Safety), Nancy, France. Tests are carried out here to establish the toxicity and cancer-causing properties of different materials, chemicals and pollutants.
