Cancer research. Large number of petri dishes with the hands of the researcher assigned to study them for precancerous (neoplastic) cells. The petri dishes contain cell cultures (purple) that have been exposed to carcinogenic materials. Use of a microscope will reveal which cells are likely to develop into cancer. Photographed in the Health and Pollutants Laboratory of the INRS (the French National Institute of Research and Safety), Nancy, France. Tests are carried out here to establish the toxicity and cancer-causing properties of different materials, chemicals and pollutants.
