Cancer research. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of part of a cancer cell being used to study the role of growth factor receptors in the disease. Antibodies, designed to attach to the receptors, are joined to gold particles (black dots) so that they are easily identifiable on the micrograph. Cancer is the incontrollable proliferation of cells. In many cancer cells there is excessive activation of growth factor receptors. Due to this the receptors are a potential target for cancer drugs.
