Caption

False-colour computed tomography (CT) scan showing an intracranial (brain) tumour, which appears as the deep purple mass at top left. The bright white appearance of the tumour on the original black & white image was the result of using an intravenous contrast agent, injected into the patient prior to taking the scan. This has outlined part of the circle of Willis, the ring of linked branches of arteries that supply the brain, which appears in gold to the right of the tumour. The circle of Willis acts to maintain the brain's blood supply in the event of a blockage in one of the main supply arteries.
