Stomach cancer. Coloured barium meal X-ray of cancer (carcinoma) of the stomach. At top right (pink) is part of the upper stomach which is healthy and filled with contrast medium. At right and lower centre the stomach wall is affected by a long infiltrating carcinoma extending down to the antrum. The stomach wall appears shrivelled and eaten away. Bones of the spine are seen at left. Stomach cancer is thought to be related in part to diet. Symptoms include appetite loss, weight loss, and vomiting. Diagnosis includes a barium X-ray in which the patient swallows barium (an X-ray opaque substance) that highlights soft tissues on X-rays.
