Lung cancer. Coloured chest X-ray of a 70 year old woman showing cancer (red, at upper right) in a lung. The bones of the ribcage can be seen around the dark lungs. The heart is seen as a purple area at bottom centre right. Lung cancer as a primary malignant tumour is in many cases linked to cigarette smoking. Symptoms include a cough due to chronic bronchitis, chest pain and coughing up blood. The cancer frequently spreads to other parts of the body, usually the bones, liver or brain. If the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage all or part of the lung can be surgically removed, but if it has spread the prognosis is poor.
