Colon cancer. Coloured barium X-ray showing cancer (blue/yellow, upper right) of the colon, part of the large intestine. The colon is one of the most common sites for cancer in the western world, symptoms including constipation and/or diarrhoea, blood in the faeces and abdominal pain. Treatment normally includes partial colectomy (removal of part of the intestine). Barium is opaque to X- rays, and is given rectally (a barium enema) before examination of the colon and rectum. It coats the inside wall of the intestine and shows up strongly on X-ray film, allowing clinical diagnosis of conditions including cancer.
