Saguaro cactus. Macrophotograph a saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea or Cereus gigantea). Its spines are modified leaf structures whose small surface area reduce water loss by evaporation. The saguaro cactus inhabits arid regions of north- western Mexico and south-western USA. It is the largest member of the cactus family, growing up to 18 metres high. Photographed in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona, USA.
