Caption

Oesophagus cancer. Coloured X-ray of a tumour (white/brown) on the oesophagus or gullet. This malignant tumour (neoplasm), primarily occurs at the lower end of the oesophagus. It affects more men than women, and is more common in black people than white people. Its development is not fully understood, but smoking and excessive alcohol consumption may play a part. As it, develops it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when food and drink is swallowed. Early detection, followed by removal of part or all of the oesophagus (oesophagectomy) can prolong life and may cure the patient.
