Bone cancer, coloured X-ray. Patient's hands affected by chondrosarcoma, a cancerous growth of cartilage, some seen at centre left (pink). It is more usually found within or on the surface of the larger bones. Occurring in middle age or as a development of a begin tumour, it causes pain and swelling. Chondrosarcoma develops slowly before spreading, so it is often detected early during development. Treatment involves amputation of the affected bone, which results in a permanent cure.
