Bone cancer. Coloured frontal X-ray of cancerous bone (dark area) in the femur (thigh bone) of a 67-year-old patient. The cancer has weakened the bone (it is a lysing metastasis), leading to a fracture (centre). The head of the femur is still in its socket in the pelvis, but the rest of the femur has sheared off at the neck and been displaced upwards. The cancerous bone can be removed, and the hip joint repaired with a prosthetic hip, but because the bone cancer is secondary (metastatic) cancer, the prognosis is poor. The original cancer was of the thyroid.
