Colon cancer, barium enema X-ray. The cancer is seen at right, as its growth narrows the interior of the colon. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the developed world, and its incidence is thought to be linked to a diet high in red meat and alcohol and low in vegetables and fibre. It causes blood in the faeces and a change in bowel habits, such as a constipation or diarrhoea or a decreased need to pass faeces. If the cancer is detected early, and before it has spread, surgical removal combined with chemotherapy can lead to a cure. If detected late the prognosis is poor, and colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths.
