Cactus spines. This is a golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii). A cactus is a plant that has tissues adapted to minimise water loss in the arid environment it inhabits. Cactus leaves are reduced to narrow spines, and the plant surface is covered in a thick, waxy outer layer. A cactus may also be able to store water.
