Flowering agave plant (Agave americana) with large flowering spike. This plant, native to Mexico, has a bushy base 2 metres high. After about 10 years it flowers and a large stalk, up to 11 metres in height extends from the base. The heart of the plant can be baked and is used as a staple food. Various other medicinal and nutritional uses have been developed for much of the rest of the plant.
