Caption

False-colour angiogram (arteriogram) of the human neck showing a major stenosis (obstruction) in a carotid artery caused by the accumulation of atheroma plaque - a condition known as atherosclerosis. Angiograms are X-ray images that are taken following the injection of a radio- opaque contrast medium into the arteries under investigation. Here, the outlined carotid artery appears red, with a distinct gap around the middle of the neck.
