Stroke. Artwork of the blood supply to the head showing one cause of a cerebral vascular accident (stroke), the lodging of an embolus (blood clot) in a branch of the carotid artery. The obstructed artery is shown in section, revealing the embolus inside. Emboli break off from a larger clot elsewhere in the body & travel through the circulation to lodge in the brain & obstruct blood flow. When brain tissue is starved of oxygen the resulting neurological damage varies from muscle weakness on one side of the body to complete hemiplegia (paralysis) of that side.
