Inflamed veins in the brain, coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan. This condition is known as cerebral thrombophlebitis. The veins (yellow) have been highlighted by introducing a radio-opaque contrast medium. In thrombophlebitis, the veins become inflamed, which impairs their ability to return blood to the heart and lungs. This can lead to clots and a slowing of blood flow. This patient suffered from migraines. In severe cases, interrupted blood flow in the brain may cause the death of brain tissue (a stroke). Treatment is of the underlying cause if one is known, but anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory drugs may help in general.
