Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Close-up of a rash of seborrhoeic dermatitis below a patient's nose. A crusty yellow deposit has formed over the pink, inflamed skin. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin inflammation characterised by a red, scaly, itchy rash on the face, especially affecting the nose and eyebrows. The exact cause is unknown but the condition is associated with over-production of sebum, an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin. The rash sometimes worsens as a result of stress. Treatment depends on the indiv- idual case. Corticosteroid drugs may help, and antibiotics prevent infection developing.
