Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Close-up of a rash of seborrhoeic dermatitis on a patient's chest. The affected area is pink and inflamed. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin inflammation characterised by a red, scaly, itchy rash on the face, scalp, chest and back. The exact cause is unknown but the condition is associated with the over-production of sebum, an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin. The rash sometimes worsens as a result of stress. Treatment depends on the individual case. Corticosteroid drugs may help, and antibiotics prevent infection developing.
