Amoebic dysentery. Light micrograph of a smear from the intestines of a patient with amoebic dysentery. At centre is an Entamoeba histolytica cyst. This is the infective stage of the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and can be contracted through the ingestion of contaminated food and drink. Symptoms include bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The protozoan may also spread to the liver, lungs and other tissues, causing abscesses. Treatment is with the antimicrobial drug metronidazole. Differential interference contrast. Magnification: x570 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
