Atopic eczema affecting the rear of a young woman's knees. Atopic eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, describes an inflammatory skin condition provoked by an allergic, hypersensitive response to a foreign substance. In atopic allergies the site of the skin reaction is distant from the region of contact with the substance responsible (known as the atopen). One example is the case of a swallowed substance causing eczema.
