Erythema multiforme. View of an acute skin rash covering the back of a male patient, in the condition of erythema multiforme. This name means "skin redness of many varieties". It is a disorder characterised by skin inflammation, often with itchy symmetrical spots which may progress to raised, pale-centred weals. Sometimes the internal mucous membranes are affected, accompanied by a generalized illness. Erythema multiforme may arise in reaction to some drugs (particularly sulphona- mides), or accompany bacterial & viral infections. Some cases occur for no obvious reason. Treatment involves addressing any known cause, and use of sedative drugs. It usually clears in 5-6 weeks.
