Eczema. View of the leg of a child suffering from eczema. A patchy and red scaling rash is seen, which may be itchy. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin which may be accompanied by blisters. Here, in the knee area, some of the eczema sores have scabbed over. This skin disorder may occur without any obvious external cause, or may be due to an allergy. Atopic eczema occurs in people who have an inherited tendency towards allergy, and is common in children. Treatment of mild eczema consists of applying emollients which keep the affected skin soft and reduce irritation and scratching. In severe cases corticosteroid drugs may be prescribed.
