Pulmonary emphysema. Sectioned lung affected by a smoking induced emphysema. In this disorder the air sacs in the lungs become enlarged and damaged reducing the surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Severe emphysema causes breathlessness which may be made worse by infections. It is often associated with chronic bronchitis, smoking and advancing age. There is no specific treatment available and the patient may become dependent on oxygen.
