Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Coloured X-ray of the chest showing COPD consist- ing of emphysema & fibrosis of the lungs. The rib cage can be seen as pale bands encircling the chest. The spinal column (yellow) is at centre. Fibrosis is an overgrowth of scar tissue due to infection or inflammation. Emphysema is a disease where the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs are damaged. The alveolar spaces become enlarged. This causes shortness of breath and reduces gas exchange.
