Epilepsy. Coloured electroencephalogram (EEG) of an epileptic seizure. The red traces show electrical activity in the brain picked up by electrodes placed on different parts of the patient's head. The positions of the electrodes are shown on the head diagrams at right. During an epileptic seizure a chaotic and unregulated electrical discharge passes through the brain, causing symptoms such as physical fits or loss of consciousness. The sudden onset of the attack is shown here by the abrupt increase in activity on the traces.
