Epilepsy. Artwork depicting an epileptic seizure, showing a brain in a human silhouette and abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) traces. The white EEG traces show electrical activity in the brain detected by electrodes placed on the patient's head. The wave traces are irregular and chaotic such as occurs during an epileptic seizure when unregulated electrical discharges pass through the brain. Symptoms of epilepsy are sudden physical fits (seizures) or a loss of conscious- ness. This depends on how much and which part of the brain is affected. Epilepsy may be inherited or may develop in childhood and be outgrown. Treatment may include anticonvulsant drugs.
