Asteatotic eczema. Close-up of a patch of asteatotic eczema on the skin of a 69-year-old man's leg. Eczema is a superficial itchy inflammation of the skin. It is classified according to its appearance and situation. Asteatotic eczema, as seen in this patient, is characterized by an area of red rash with dry, cracked and flaking skin. It is usually associated with the drying out of the skin and is often found in the elderly or in those suffering from a minor degree of malnutrition. It is aggravated by soaps and other irritants and by scratching. Treatment is with air humidifiers, emollients or weak steroids.
