Eczema. View of an eczema rash on the feet of a patient. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin, usually itchy, which may be accompanied by scaling or blisters. It may occur without any obvious external cause or may be caused by an allergy. Mild cases may be treated by applying emollients such as petroleum jelly. These keep the skin in the affected area soft, reducing irritation and scratching. The feet should also be kept cool, as heat tends to make the condition worse. Severe cases require corticosteroid drugs and antibiotics against bacterial infections. There is a scale at lower left.
