Epilepsy. Coloured functional magnetoencephalogram (MEG) of the brain of a patient with frontal lobe epilepsy. The MEG is overlaid on a three- dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the patient's brain. The peak of the electrical brain activity in this patient is red (centre left). Epilepsy is a condition characterised by seizures, caused by abnormal, chaotic electrical activity in the brain. Symptoms include unconsciousness and jerky spasmodic movements. The symptoms of epilepsy may be treated with anticonvulsant drugs, although it cannot be cured.
