Eczema, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Eczema is a form of dermatitis or inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. In eczema the outer layer of the skin grows very rapidly and is easily shed most often resulting in redness, skin oedema (swelling), itching and dryness, flaking, blistering, cracking, or bleeding. Seen are a clump of these disorganised squamous cells. Magnification x800 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
