Close-up of the eye showing a cataract, an opacity in the lens of the eye that results in blurred vision. The most common type is senile cataract, seen in the elderly, but some cataracts are congenital & others due to metabolic disorders such as diabetes, galactosaemia and hypocalcaemia. Cataract may also arise from direct or indirect injury to the lens and prolonged exposure to infrared light (as in glass-blowers' cataract) or ionising radiation. Cataracts are treated by surgical removal of the affected lens.
