Detached retina: the separation of the retina from the choroid, the layer of the eyeball it is normally attached to, is seen here at centre left as a brown discolouration. Retinal detachment occurs when fluid accumulates between the retina and the choroid. The condition may be secondary to inflammation or tumour of the choroid or a disorder of the vitreous humour. It may be treated surgically.
