Caption

Close-up of the eye showing hyphaema, bleeding into the chamber that lies in front of the eye (a brown discolouration can be seen at the bottom of the iris). In this case the loss of blood occurred following a trabeculectomy, an operation to relieve glaucoma that involves the removal of a small segment of eye tissue. Hyphaema can also occur as a consequence of blunt trauma; a squash ball injury, for example.
