Caption

Close-up of the eye of an elderly woman, showing arcus senilis, a greyish line in the periphery of the cornea that appears around the edge of the iris. Arcus senilis consists of an infiltration of fatty material and is common in the elderly. When it occurs in younger people it may indicate abnormal fat metabolism, yet there is a wide racial variation in its incidence. Arcus senilis never affects vision.
