Eye infection. Close-up of an eye affected by viral conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is a transparent membrane which covers the white of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. Viral conjunctivitis usually develops in association with a cold, a sore throat or an illness such as measles. Symptoms include redness, discomfort, a discharge from the affected eye and occasionally an abnormal sensitivity to bright light. Viral conjunctivitis tends to heal better without treatment.
