Eye disorder. Close-up of an eye affected by episcleritis. This is an inflammation which affects the outermost layers of the sclera, the white of the eye. It usually occurs for no known reason and generally affects middle-aged men; it may be a complication of rheumatoid arthritis. The inflammation may cause a deep, dull aching pain that tends to be worse at night. During the day there may be an abnormal sensitivity to bright light. The condition typically disappears by itself and the symptoms are relieved by eye-drops or ointment containing a corticosteroid drug.
