Conjunctivitis. Close-up of the left eye of a woman with acute conjunctivitis. There was also periorbital oedema (swelling) around the affected eye. The patient complained of a sore, watery eye, with lids which stuck together in the mornings. Otherwise known as "pink eye", conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate mucous membrane covering the front of the eye and the insides of the eyelids. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen & may discharge water or pus. Conjunctivitis is caused by bacterial infection, allergy, or by physical or chemical irritants. In this case the condition responded favourably to topical antibiotics.
