Viral conjunctivitis. View of a swollen and weeping eye caused by viral conjunctivitis. The cornea and the skin surrounding the eye are red & inflamed. Conjunctivitis (pink eye) causes inflammation of the conjunctiva (mucous membrane covering the eye). Conjunctivitis is caused by an infection, in this case viral infection. It may also be caused by an allergy. Symptoms may include redness, itchiness, irritation, pus discharge & sensitivity to light. Treatment involves washing the eye with warm water to remove any pus, & eye drops containing an antibiotic drug may be given. Viral conjunctivitis tends to get better without any treatment.
