Meibomian cyst (chalazion) on eyelid. Close-up of a raised swelling (lower centre) on the lower eye- lid. This condition is known as a chalazion or meibomian cyst. It is caused by an obstruction of one of the meibomian glands which lubricate the edge of the eyelid. These swellings are usually painless and do not usually require treatment as they disappear by themselves. Large chalazions which can cause blurring of the vision need to be removed surgically under local anaesthetic from behind the eyelid. Meibomian cysts can occur at any age, but are common in people suffering from acne or seborrhoeic dermatitis.
