Caption

Acute iritis. Close-up of a 52 year old man's eye with iritis. The white of the eye (the sclera) is bloodshot. Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, (coloured part) usually caused by autoimmune disorders. However, it can be caused by infections such as syphilis and tuberculosis. Treatment involves taking corticosteriod drugs to reduce inflammation, and atropine is dropped into the eye to block nerve impulses to the iris muscles. In severe cases, iritis can severely affect vision.
