Conjunctivitis. Face of a two year old boy showing his inflamed and swollen eyelids due to conjunctivitis. This is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane which covers the eye. It can be caused by an allergic reaction or by bacterial or viral infection. It causes itching and irritation, and occasionally also abnormally high sensitivity to light (photophobia). Treatment depends on the cause. Infective conjunctivitis is treated with eye drops containing antibiotic drugs, while antihistamine eye drops are used to treat the allergic form.
