Cataract in the eye of a 46-year-old woman. The cataract is the large area of opacity (grey) where the pupil would normally be seen. A cataract is a progressive opacity of the eye's lens, due to changes in the structure of the lens. It causes blurred vision that can lead to blindness if it is untreated. When required, surgical treatment can restore vision. The lens is removed and a plastic replacement inserted.
