Ectropion of the lower eyelid in an 87-year-old man. This is a condition in which the eyelid turns away from the eye. This disrupts the distribution of tears in the eye, resulting in dry painful eyeballs and at the same time excessive tearing. This is a case of senile ectropion, which is caused by a loss of tissue elasticity and muscle tone in old age. Treatment is with surgery to tighten the muscle that holds the eyelid in place. While waiting for surgery, a lubricant can be used to relieve dryness.
